David accepted the call to serve as a young missionary for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Mexico City, Mexico from 1968-1970.

This was the first of various missions he would serve throughout his life and the foundation of understanding what a mission is all about. He would use that understanding later on in life as a mission president to help many young missionaries gain the same understanding of how serving the Lord changes hearts and lives.
